Assignment: Refinish
15 Year Old Fiberglass Laminate on Marine Hill Swimming
Pool at Guantanamo Bay
After receiving
clearance by the U.S. Department of State, Bill
Nash, CEO of UGlassIt, and a crew of outstanding
fiberglass pool resurfacing specialists managed
by Rollie Robinson, arrived at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba._small.JPG)
The Marine
Hill Pool is one of three swimming pools available
to the U.S. armed forces stationed at Guantanamo
Bay. The pool is enormous and well-cared-for by
the authorized military contractor.
But no
matter how well cared-for fiberglass may be, eventually
the finish coat known as "swimming pool gel coat"
must be removed, and then replaced with exactly
the same finish. Commercial pools should have the gel coat replaced every 8-12
years depending upon usage and proper care.
Only swimming
pool gel coat, which is non-porous, can protect
the fiberglass and resin from the onslaught of chemically
treated water.
In
2002, UGlassIt supplied the vinyl ester resin, swimming
pool gel coat, resin based pool putty, and solvent,
to create a new 7-layer laminate on one of the three
pools. This laminate was installed by one of the
military contractors using our book,
Pool Resurfacing Made Easy.
The book
combined with contineous telephone assistance by
the author, Bill Nash, enabled the contractor, with
no fiberglass experience whatsoever, to install
a perfectly formed 7-layer laminate on both the
diving pool and a nearby kiddie pool.
During
the stay at Gitmo, both Mr. Nash and Mr. Robinson inspected the Officer's Family pool and the kiddie pool resurfaced
from scratch in 2002, and found them to be in excellent
condition.
